Chapter Nine

Jan sat at one of the unoccupied tables in the coffee shop, his knee jiggling anxiously. What was wrong with Diana? She said nothing was the matter, but he knew otherwise. He was beginning to sense when she was in distress and needed help, just like Rumple had known his beloved was in danger all those decades ago.

Georgia breezed past his table and set down two fresh doughnuts covered in a rich brown glaze. “Don’t kill me, but I slipped up. I told Diana you’re cursed.”

“What?” A splash of molten gold slammed from his fingertips. Georgia ducked in time and then looked at the floor.

“Can I keep that?”

“What? Yes, I don’t care. Diana knows? Did you tell her my name? Did she guess?” Maybe this accident wasn’t so terrible.

“No. I say your name all the time and she can’t hear it. She finally demanded to know why. I had to tell her.”

“You couldn’t have gone with a non-supernatural explanation? Or played dumb?” Jan demanded, rising and pacing, his hands jammed into the pouch in his hoodie. Tick. Click. Clack. Small flat gold discs were dropping from his palms like beads of sweat.

“I would have... if she hadn’t just met Georgie.”

Jan sat. “Oh.”

“Yeah. Oh.”

His heart sank, despite the fact that it was beating wildly. “Wait, is she leaving town? Did she say? Oh, God, Georgia! I love her. I can’t lose her.”

“She didn’t quit. I think she’s just adjusting.”

“Was she scared? Did she ask questions? Did she—”

“Come up behind you with lobster bisque and two croque madames?” Diana appeared and slid plates and bowls onto the table with a deft hand. “I’m not fired.”

“Thank God,” Georgia and Jan chorused.

“But I do want to talk to you.” Diana looked pointedly at him.

His hoodie was suddenly five pounds heavier. Green mist was teasing the corners of his sight.

Some people shit bricks. He dropped gold bullion.
